Paul Roczek

Paul Roczek is today supposed to be one of the most sought after European violin teachers of his generation. Grown up and educated in Vienna (Franz Samohyl) and later in Bern (Max Rostal) he was a member of the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera (Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) already during his time as a student, later he joined the famous chamber orchestra "die Wiener Solisten" and performed as first violinist of the Austrian String Quartet for thirty years.

In 1969 he was appointed with this quartet to the Mozarteum Academy of Music, as it was then known, and his growing interest in teaching as well as in organizing activities soon took him to higher positions. Professor for violin and chamber music, head of department, deputy vice-chancellor and artistic director of the International Summer Academy were the characteristic landmarks in a successful evolving life of an artist. He was invited many times to sit on juries of major international competitions like Kulenkampf, Kreisler, Louis Spohr, Kloster Schöntal, Singapore and Mozart Competitions in Salzburg and Augsburg. He is a co-founder and the artistic director of the violin section of the famous Zhuhai International Mozart Competition for Young Musicians. As well he gave master classes at important academies like Guildhall London, Paris, Prag, Mannheim, Aachen, Weimar, Tschaikowski Conservatory Moskau, Menuhin Academy Blonay, Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Qingdao, Zhuhai, Toho Gakuen Tokyo, Kobe, Vilnius, Tallin, Goeteborg, Michigan, Philadelphia, Dallas etc. and is a faculty member of famous summer schools like Bowdoin, Semmering, Mozarteum and Keshet Eilon.

Many young students of his violin class performed very successfully in international competition; Ziyu He, studying since 2011 with him at the Mozarteum was the winner of the Menuhin Competition 2016 in London and the youngest soloist ever invited by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to play in a series concert at the famous Große Saal of the Vienna Musikverein. Clara Shen, born in Munich in 2005 and a winner of Menuhin Competition 2018 (4th place) and of Zhuhai Mozart Competition 2017 (2nd place) is another upcoming great talent to watch out for.

In recent years Roczek focused in teaching high talented children at the Pre College of the Mozarteum aiming at fostering not only best young violinists but extraordinary musicians full of fantasy and creativity.
